Oops...
I should never try to fix things. Kip and JT were swapping the motherboard on a Dell server that bit the bullet in the power event yesterday. They were working on trying to get the heat sink off. It was a little plastic lever and tab that locked the sink on top of the CPU. They were being very careful but having some problems. I decided it was my turn. I got it off very easily, changed the CPU, and started to re-mount the sink.Apparently there is very little difference in the force required to correctly afix the bracket and breaking it. I applied just a bit too much.
But with a little head scratching JT and I came up with an elegant solution. Zip ties. He held, I pulled and voila, problem solved. Here is a bad picture. I like it.
